The International Students Advising team works with Lafayette College international students to ensure they take full advantage of their personal, educational, and career opportunities.

To do this, we will:

  • Inform and guide international students and recent graduates in following the government regulations that allow them to study and work in the U.S.
  • Provide international students with the information, resources, and support needed to flourish at Lafayette College
  • Offer programming and leadership opportunities that enhance the education of the entire student body
  • Create a safe space to generate ideas for future initiatives and a greater sense of belonging

Our workshops are designed to help international students with the logistics of studying and working in the U.S., and acclimating to campus and the surrounding community.

International Orientation

This is our department’s signature program. Held the week before first-year orientation, International Orientation will provide international students with the tools they need to adjust to campus and the surrounding community.

Day-to-day activities include assisting with paperwork, setting up cellphones and bank accounts, enrolling students in health insurance, and exploring the Easton area and Lehigh Valley.

Students are paired with upper-class mentors who are also international students in order to create social networks and a sense of belonging.

Programming includes current events and hot topics, understanding slang, deciphering dining hall menus, and community-building with your roommate and dormmates.

Workshops

Curricular Practical Training (CPT)

Our CPT program will help international students navigate working in the U.S. while studying at Lafayette College. Students will learn how CPT connects with the College’s internship policies, the CPT application timeline, filing process, and responsibilities through SEVP.

Grad School Transfer Process for F-1 Students

This workshop will walk international students through timelines, required documentation, and the SEVIS process for F-1, those who plan to attend graduate school in the U.S.

Immigration Attorney Q&A

Art Serratelli of Serratelli Mijal PLLC will discuss the H1-B process, other visa options post-OPT, and immigration-related topics relevant to F-1 students. There will be an opportunity for questions during a Q&A session. Students also can send questions in advance to blockj@lafayette.edu.

State and Local Tax Filing for F-1 Students

This workshop, offered by the College Controller’s office, will teach international students who are required to file a state and local tax return the process and provide access to tax filing software.

How do I? Series:

Get a Driver’s License

This program provides information on the application and testing process for a driver’s license, including how to gain driving experience. We also will teach students how to rent or purchase a car, and become a van-certified driver for Lafayette College.

Get a Social Security Number (SSN)

All students with campus jobs or internships off-campus must have an SSN. Learn about the application process and how to get set up for payroll and tax compliance.

Navigate the U.S. Health Care System

The U.S. health care system is difficult to navigate, even for people who have grown up with it. Tricia Shoudt of Bailey Health Center on campus will provide information on what’s covered under the College health plan, what it means when a physician is “In-Network” or “Out-of-Network,” deductibles and co-pays, and local health care options when the campus center is closed.

Community Engagement Programs

Conversation Pardner Program

In partnership with the English for Academic Purpose Center, this peer program promotes intercultural competence through virtual conversations. The CPP pairs upper-level domestic students with incoming international students.

International Friendship Program

Designed to strengthen a sense of belonging and community, the International Friendship Program pairs international students with local host families. These connections will not only help first- and second-year students acclimate to living and studying in the U.S., they will also give students a chance to share their cultural backgrounds and traditions with the community.

March Around the World

International students will connect with elementary-age students at Francis A. March Elementary School—the Little Leopards—to share their language, cooking, art, and dance. This is an opportunity for College students to give back to the community while building leadership skills, and for young students to learn about the world around them.
